Mysuru: A Mysore University professor was suspended after the university syndicate decided to go by the rule book as he was under judicial custody for more than 2 days.
Prof Mahesh Chandraguru
During last January, Prof Mahesh Chandraguru from Journalism department, during one of his lectures had made derogatory remarks against one of the Hindu gods. A complaint in this regard was lodged against him at the Jayalaskshmipuram police station. The court had summoned him, but he failed to appear in person even after notices were sent by the court. Finally, when the professor approached the court to seek bail, the court handed him over to judicial custody for 3 days.
During the special syndicate meeting today at Crawford hall, it was decided to suspend the professor under the Karnataka Civil Service Record (KCOSR) rules which clearly indicate that that a faculty member has to be suspended if he remains in judicial custody for than two days and does not report back to work within 48 hours after one is taken into judicial custody.
