Mysore:  Mysore Dasara, one of the biggest festivals of South India, now has an official page on social networking site Facebook. Within days of its launch, the page has already received 300 “likes” with some even from bureaucrats.

In order to ensure a record footfall during this year festivities, the Mysore district administration has taken the online route. Mysore deputy commissioner C Shikha initiated steps to open the Facebook page, weeks ahead of the colourful carnival in October. The page will be used to inform people about the latest news on Dasara, and other programmes and arrangements for the flagship festival.

According to Shikha, the page will be a tool to reach out to a large chunk of people. “Social networking sites help in keeping people posted on all details about the festival. We want to promote the festival in a big way this season and attract crowd from all over the world,” she said. People can also give us suggestions through the page, she added.

The deputy commissioner maintained that the primary focus is on Dasara celebrations, but eventually the page will also be utilized as a forum for visitors to air their grievances. She also added that it is also not possible to redress every plaint via the page as it is simply not feasible.

Appreciating Shikha for the initiative, P Manivanna, an IAS officer and former DC of Mysore, said, “This is an excellent pro-public initiative. She is the first DC of Mysore to interact with the public through social media.”

He also said that Shikhas move is an important step towards inclusive administration. “It has the potential to change the very nature of administration,” Manivanna said.
