“Media should cultivate the right values among people”, Prof. C Basavaraju

Mysuru: “Believing in superstitions, our society is still confronting uncultured behavior. Media being a powerful tool of social transformation should cultivate the right values”,  opined Prof C Basavaraju,  Registrar University of Mysore on Tuesday.

He was speaking at the valedictory of “info FRAMES- 2015” a State Level Seminar and Short Film Festival organised by Director Educational Multimedia Research Centre jointly with Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Mysore at Rani Bahadur auditorium.

Speaking on the occasion,  he said, “Visual media has the potential to inculcate values in the society. They are eligible to reform the society better than any other forms of administration. Being a fourth pillar of our democracy, media should work and supplement the development of the country. But unfortunately, there is paucity of quality films. The growth of science and technology has indirectly affected quality. There has been a drastic change in the society but even with this the media should try and build harmony  and promote humanity”.
Further he said, “I believe in  the efficacy of the media in promoting the values of democracy. It pin points the defects in administration and provides transparency, which is why we have seen many corrupt leaders, behind the bars today. Throughout it has fought against ignorance. They are able to regulate the political criminalisation which the civil society is unable to do so far”.
He added, “But the people who have no values have been promoting yellow journalism which is a threat”.
Among the five films that were selected for the final short list, the movie “WHO” was given the Best Film award.

Prof. Praveen Krupakar, Dr Niranjana Vaanalli, Director Educational Multimedia Research Centre, Dr C K Puttaswamy Head of the Department DOS in Mass Communication and Journalism were present.
