“Maximum complaints under the RTI Act cleared at the first level of appeal”

Mysuru: Karnataka State Information Commissioner Dr. D Shekar expressed satisfaction that the maximum complaints under Right to Information Act  being cleared at the first level of appeal.

“The Act would be more effective if more number of Public Information Officers are deputed”, he said on Tuesday here.

Speaking to media persons, The Information Commissioner asserted that if the necessary information is provided to the applicant by the respective departments, there will be fewer burdens on the Information Commission which also helps to save money to the govt exchequer by decreasing the top ranked bureaucrats.

He said, overall the RTI applications received by the revenue department during the year 2013-14, was 1,46,715 of which he said that Revenue Department responded to 1,32,353, the Urban Development Authority responded to 89026 against the 83550 received, RDPR disposed 70,839 out of 74,001 applications. Transport Department 21, 773 out of 22, 718, Education Department cleared 20,755 applications out of 21,139 and Housing Department cleared 12,027 out of 12,049 applications.

Though there are 80,805 Public Information Officers serving in 62,602 public authorities, still the Information Commission is receiving complaints against the public authority regarding poor response. Most of the complaints alleged that the information was not provided under the RTI pleas.
