Legal aid to jail inmates at Central Prisons

Mysore: A legal awareness camp was organized at the Central Prisons for the prisoners under the leadership of Principal Senior Civil Judge JR Mendonsa.

Addressing the inmates Mendonsa said that in the wake of rise in number of pending cases before the courts in general, the judiciary had launched a campaign to create awareness on the advantage of confession among the accused.

To facilitate the same, legal services to the jail inmates and a Legal Advisory Cell will be set up in the Mysore Central Prisons, Mendonsa informed.

Asserting over the various benefits of confession of the crime, Mendonsa said that if the accused confessed to the crime 24 hours within the chargesheet being filed, their period of sentence would be reduced. However he also pointed that it was also the prime duty of the Police to produce the accused before the court within the stipulated time of 24 hours.

Additional Police Superintendent Pradeep Kumar inaugurated the programme.
