Mysore: Although all the past administrations that reigned in Karnataka determined to make the state free from huts, it seems that is not imminent in the nearest future; because the people living in Jai Bheema Nagar, Bannoor, are still living in huts that is their palace for the past 30 years.

In spite of 65 years elapsed since Independence, the life of hutment dwellers has not improved at all. There are a few who have roof over their heads to take shelter from rains and sun. Despite, the state government introduced several programmes to construct houses to hutment dwellers and homeless, it has not reached the people who still live in huts.
When I met Jai Bheema Nagar, I found the huts are so fragile that could hardly bear the brunt of heavy winds and are leaking during monsoon. The locality lacks basic amenities of electricity, proper roads and drinking water supply, which proves that the humans of past ages live in modern world. The peoples representatives who arrive during election campaign offer assurances and forget these country folks, owing to which the situation of hutment dwellers has not seen the light of the day.
The hutment dwellers allege that in spite of their repeated pleas to ministers in the past several years, in order to provide essential amenities such as modest houses to live, proper roads, drinking water supply, electricity connection and drainages; all is in vain. The dwellers are hoping their situation would improve if the concerned officers take earnest interest in this regard.
A few hutment dwellers alleged that the housing benefits of government has not been implemented properly. The officers failed to allot the houses to most eligible beneficiaries.Meanwhile, there are counter allegations that a few hutment dwellers who are beneficiaries of government housing have rented their homes and continue to live in their huts and urge the officials to take action on them.
