Mangalore:A 15 member team of Indian Water Portal was on a four-day tour of various places in and around Mangalore recently to study the water management system and the rain water harvesting techniques adopted in some places.
The team members held an interactive meeting with the media at the Netravathi Auditorium of Zilla Panchayat on October 28, Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Ashish Panda, one of the team members, highlighted the rain water harvesting techniques adopted in Thar Desert, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur in Rajasthan. In Thar Desert, rain water is collected in Beris, ponds and artesian wells, he said adding in Jaisalmer people depended on water storage tanks. In Jodhpur, people solely relied on rain water for agricultural purposes, he informed. He said the area does not feel the heat of water scarcity as people have opted for rain water harvesting techniques. The Indira Gandhi Canal project on which the government spent crores of rupees has not helped the common man, he said adding it were the rain harvesting techniques which ultimately proved beneficial.
Shrikanth Prassan, another team member spoke about the rain water harvesting done in Yenepoya Medical College, NMPT, Farangipete and Manipal University. He said the region which receives 4000 mm of rainfall in 100 days should opt for rain water harvesting.
Veteran journalist Shree Padre, Team members of Indian Water Portal Bishwadeep, Nisha, Prateek, Amita, Chicu, Hamsa, Makarand, Manu, Rekha, Sabita,Seetha, and Usha were present on the occasion.
