Mukthagangothri: “Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is the tool which makes man human. Today peace and security of mankind is in danger, and Human Rights are violated all over the world incessantly and with impunity” said State Law Commission Chairman Justice S R Nayak here on Tuesday.

Speaking after inaugurating the national conference on “Human Rights – A Natural and Positive Edict” at the Kaveri Hall in the Karnataka State Open University campus,  organized by the Department of Studies and Research in Law, he said, “The concept of Human Rights represents an attempt to protect individuals from oppression, exploitation and injustices”.

Exploring the significance of adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the former chairperson of state Human Rights Commission, Justice S R Nayak, stated that “While there are certain necessities like food, water, shelter which are basic for sustaining life and saving it from hunger and destitution, disease and despair and without which one cannot live, there are also certain fundamental values and freedoms without which it would not be worth living”

Addressing the students and scholars who came from law colleges across the state, he pointed “Humanism is the soul of Justice. Therefore, no cause is more worthy than the cause of human rights. They are what make man human. In a democracy, the true conception of the administration is that the least concern of the last person is of the highest consideration of the state”. UDHR provides certain standards to achieve human goals for all the people and all the nations, he added.

Speaking at  the conference, the Mysore University Vice Chancellor K S Rangappa said that though the state has laws to protect human rights, violations  have not come under control.  Assaults against women, children are still continuing. “It is the responsibility of every person to  understand  human rights to protect human values”, he added. Professor Janhavi S S, organizing secretary, DoSRL, Professor P S Naik, Registrar were present. About 600 law students and scholars took part.
