Jubilee celebration: Meghana Devanga bags silver for UoM after gap of 25 years

Mysuru: Meghana Devanga, student of I BA at Maharanis Arts College, Mysuru  won silver medal in the shot put event in the All India Inter-University Athletic competition organized by Anna University at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Coimbatore. While the University has all the reasons to celebrate, what makes this silver all the more special is the fact that it is after 25 years that the medal came to University of Mysore.
Recently in the very same ground, in the junior national championship she created new record by throwing the iron ball to a distance of 13.93mtr. On Thursday, brushing aside the ankle injury that she suffered during the qualifying round, Meghana bagged silver with a remarkable performance of throwing the shot put to a distance of 13.73mtr. Kachnar Choudary from University of Rajasthan stood first by throwing a distance of 14.27mtr.

Meghana, speaking to newskarnataka.com said that her next target is to perform extremely well at the senior nationals which is slated to be held in couple of months.” She is trained by Vasanth Kumar, Athletic Coach, Sports Authority of Karnataka. She is also product of Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports Hostel in Mysuru.

P Krishnaiah, Director, UOM said that in 1991, KC Kavitha won silver medal in shot put event at the All India Inter-University competition. After a wait of 25 years, Meghana had again brought home silver. The University will honor Meghana for her outstanding victory with cash award, it is said.
