Excess Rains cause Losses up to Rs 475.84 lac

Madikeri: The monsoon this year has been exceeded the records in the district.  The rivulets, streams, lakes, canals, water ponds are overflowing due to torrential rains that have lashed across the district in the past 2 months.  The people in Karnataka are joyous as major dams in the state are already full, while the farmers in neighbouring Tamil Nadu are also happy.

The education institutions declared 11 days as holidays owing to torrential rains across the district.  The torrential rains coupled with heavy gales damaged roads, snapped electricity supply, damaged crops and houses, cattle perished in floods, the connectivity between Mysore – Bantwal state highway and Madikeri – Chettalli route was hampered.  The district registered an average of 1,669.86 millimeters across the district in the past, while this monsoon season by the end of July the rainfall recorded has been 2,284.67 millimeters.  It’s 136.82 percent more than the past year.  The rainfall recorded in 2012 was 945.95 millimeters and in 2011 it was 1,609.23 millimeters.  In taluk-wise analysis, Madikeri taluk recorded an average rainfall of 1,992.30 millimeters, it is 3,233.67 millimeters by July 31 2013.  It was 1,299.75 millimeters in 2012 and 2,165 millimeters in 2011.  Overall Madikeri taluk recorded 162.31 percent.

The average rainfall till July in Somavarapete taluk is 1,294 millimeters, its 1,943.24 millimeters in 2013.  It was 755.55 millimeters in 2012 and 1,240.14 millimeters in 2011.  The taluk registered an excess rain fall of 150.17 percent.  The average rain fall so far in Virajpete taluk was 1,723.30 millimeters, while up till July 31 2013, it was 1,677.09 millimeters and it was 779.84 millimeters in 2012.

The rainfall recorded in 2011 was 1,622.28 millimeters, an increase of 97.32 percent.  Overall, it was modest in 2011 and shortfall in 2012.  The district registered a rainfall of 136.82 percent up till now.  The incessant rains this year caused loss to the tune of Rs 475.94 lac, owing to floods.  Three persons were perished and 7 cattle washed away in flood waters. Seven houses are fully damaged, while 161 houses were partially damaged.  The loss of private property, roads, electric poles etc was ascertained to be around Rs 475.94 lac, as per the information given by deputy division officer G Prabhu.
