Mysuru: Dejected over the fact that his banana produce could not fetch him good market price, a farmer set his entire banana plantation ablaze, at Maragowdanahalli in K R Taluk on April 20.
Farmer named Swamy had grown over 3800 banana plants in his 4 acres of land one year ago. This year, when the produce was ready for sale, there are no buyers.
Fighting drought on one hand, Swamy could not cope up with the depression that fall in market price caused.
“If I sell the bananas in the market I will earn only Rs 2 per kg. With this amount we cannot even meet our travel expenses. Hence, I have set the plantation on fire,” he said.
Swamy has a loan of Rs 4 lac from a co-operative society for Banana farm. With no means left to repay it, Swamy now stands clueless as the smoke from the charred banana trees engulf the area.
He feels that if government could provide good support price to farmers, no farmer in the state will ever end life.
