Mysuru: Despite several attempts by City’s civic authorities in the past, the taxpayers’ lackadaisical approach has hindered them from reaching revenue collection targets.

Though there are more adverse reports on demonetisation than benefits, the move has given a huge reprieve to the Mysuru City Municipal Council (CMC) which has mopped in Rs 6.75 crores in taxes in less than 10 days, since November 9.
Despite all the efforts, CMC had failed on all counts in revenue generation but now it definitely has to thank the NDA-led central government for the sudden inflow to make it cash rich. Property tax evaders who failed to turn up on all earlier occasions are now lining up with old currency bundles to settle their dues.
Reacting on the latest developments, Mayor S L Byrappa said, “In the past we had never collected taxes to this extent. We used to generate around Rs 3 to 3.5 Crore maximum under pressure situations”. He sounded confident about touching double digit mark of Rs 10 Crores by November 24, the deadline to exchange old notes.
The CMC cash counter will remain open till 6 pm on November 24 to enable public to pay their dues using old currency of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations.
