Mysore: A family who have witnessed  the havoc caused by flash floods in Uttarkhand recently have now  returned  safely to the city.

Suma, wife of Vadiraj, daughter Phalguni and Sumas father Bheemasen Rao, mother Radha, sister Vijayabharati, mother-in-law Pushpa, father-in-law Anantapadmanabha, relative IAS qualified Chaitra, all residing at D Subbayya Road, Chamaraja layout, here, returned from pilgrimage tour to north India.

The entire family left on pilgrimage tour to north India along with 42 pilgrims from here on May 30. The group reached New Delhi and visited Kashi, Buddha Gaya and Gaya.  They stayed in a guest house at Gowrikund that lies 14 kilometers away from Kedaranat temple on Friday June 17.  They were supposed to visit Kedarnat temple on the following day when it rained heavily.

“We survived because we left Kedarnat disregarding the heavy rains. We saw Gowrikund was inundated as we headed 6 kilometers from there. We were helpless to rescue thousands of people who were washed away in the flood waters.  When we finished puja at Kedarnat and reached Sitapura – Ramapura, we got news that Kedarnat was fully submerged in floods.  We will never forget in our life that we were saved twice from imminent death. We believe that God has saved us from the jaws of death,” recalled Suma, one among the survivor.

“We had to stay in Sitapura village which is near Rishikesh without a choice as the landslides along the road blocked the traffic. The house where we stayed was flooded and we had to stay there 4 days in the dinghy without food and water.

We were terrified to see people, cattle, automobiles, huge trees and buildings being washed away in the flood waters. I get petrrified when I recall.  It was like heaven when we had gone to Kedaranat but felt like hell on our return journey.  We set our return journey after 4 days via Guptakashi – Devaprayaga, Rudraprayaga and bypass road to Maila, Srinagar, Haridawar and reached safely to New Delhi,”said the family who survived the worst.
