Chamarajanagar: As many as 10 people recently lost their lives after consuming prasadam at a temple in the remote village of Sulwadi in Chamarajanagar’s Hanur taluk. Reportedly, a child was among those who died in the tragic incident. It was, however, reported that there are chances that the death toll will rise as many more devotees are in a critical condition in hospitals across Chamarajanagar and Mysuru.
According to sources, special prayers and rituals were being performed at the temple for the foundation stone laying ceremony of a Gopuram for the local deity—Kichhukatti Maramma. Scores of villagers from the neighbouring villages thronged at Sulwadi for the occasion. After the devotees were served Ricebath that was prepared at the temple, several of them complained of vomiting and diarrhoea. A 108 ambulance was alerted once the number of complaints rose and some of the devotees fell unconscious.
Sources said that many of the devotees were taken to Holy Cross hospital at Kamagere in Kollegal taluk, which is close by, while some others were rushed to different nursing homes in Kollegal town.
It is gathered that a majority of the patients are having difficulties breathing and are unconscious. Those who are in a serious condition have been moved to Mysuru for further treatment, sources said.
Speaking to reporters in Belagavi after the incident, Hanur MLA Narendra informed that the officials have been directed to send the Prasadam for testing.
Various officials including Chamarajanagar Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police have visited the spot and are keeping an eye on the developments.
