Central Workshop Mysuru South declared No.1 in India

Mysuru: The Railway Workshop at Mysuru which was established as a base workshop of the erstwhile Mysuru State Railway in 1924 has been declared as the No.1 among the workshops of Indian Railway for Repair and Maintenance of Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches said Neeraj Jain, Chief Workshop Manager, Central Workshop Mysuru South, South Western Railway.

Speaking after inaugurating the 62nd Railway Week Celebrations of Central Workshop Mysuru South, SWR at NIE Diamond Jubilee Sports Complex here on Wednesday he said, “The workshop was expanded to the present form in 1938 with the task of maintaining the Metre Gauge (MG) Rolling Stock. Since then, the activities steadily increased like Periodical Overhauling (POH) of MG Steam Locomotives, Coaches and Wagons. The Peak POH workload was of the order of 8.0 Steam Locomotives, 62.5 units of MG coaches and 257 MG wagon units per month.”

“Broad Gauge (BG) coach POH was started in this workshop August 1994 onwards. Adding a feather on the cap, this workshop was nominated for carrying out SS-1, SS-2 and SS-3 Repairs of LHB coaches, which were started from November 2012. We achieved POH out-turn of 896 BG coaches in the current year against 866 coaches in the year 2015-16 and IOH of 607 coaches against the target of 480 during 2016-17. We also supply wheel sets to KJM, BEML, Bengaluru Division and Mysuru Division as per their requirements. In addition to this, we have successfully turned out 107 SS-1 LHB and 15 SS-II LHB coaches during 2016-17. Mysuru workshop has also manufactured 15,052 brake blocks during the year 2016-17. During 2016-17, we have fitted 673 bio-toilets in 195 coaches and also fitted mobile charging units in 195 non AC coaches“, added Neeraj.

Neeraj also mentioned that workshop is now equipped to undertake POH of 10 Air Conditioned (AC) & 60 Non AC BG coaches with capacities to feed the requisite spares not only to the workshop but also to Mysuru and Bengaluru Divisions. “The proposal for augmentation of POH facilities in order to enhance the out turn of coaches from 70 to 80 per month at a total cost of Rs 39.22 crores has been sanctioned by Railway Board. The project envisages not only increased out turn but also reducing the POH time (cycle time), thereby increasing the availability of coaches for passenger service. It also aims for Improvements in safety requirements expected as per the norms of Factories Act” pointed Neeraj.

On the occasion, 233 employees were awarded for their outstanding work during 2016-17. Apart from this 18 group awards were also presented. Neeraj also congratulated Mohammad Siddiq, Vincent Gerald, S Eshwaramma of Mysuru Workshop who received Railway Week Award at the General Manager level for the year 2016-17. The four rolling shield was awarded to AC Mechanical shop, Wheel Shop Mechanical Shop and Paint Shop. Wheel shop also won the trophy for “best maintained shop.”
