Biography of M. S. Subbalaxmi released

Mysore :“Bhuvana Bhagya MS” a biography of M. S. Subbalaxmi, the renowned Carnatic Vocalist, written by Mrs Shylaja and T S Venugopal was released at a well attended function at the Gaana Bharathi Veene Sheshanna Bhavana Mysore.

Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi ( 16 September 1916 – 11 December 2004), also known as M.S., was a renowned Carnatic vocalist.. She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor.[1] She is the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay award, often considered Asia’s Nobel Prize,[2] in 1974 with the citation reading “Exacting purists acknowledge Srimati M. S. Subbulakshmi as the leading exponent of classical and semi-classical songs in the Karnataka tradition of South India

The book entitled “Bhuvana Bhagya MS” was  released by V Ramnarayan, Editor of the Monthly magazine “Shruthi”  and S Divakar, popular writer. After releasing the book V Ramnarayan shared his personal views on Subbalaxmi. He said she was the best singer he had ever come across in his life. He also added that,  at the funeral of  M. S,. as she was fondly known, there were people from all walks of life and all economic classes.

S Divakar said the writers have written the book in simple language,  which can be understood by common people. He said that MS believed in the principle that Practice makes perfect. He said that  she use to practice a single raga repeatedly to get it perfect. He also applauded her punctuality saying that she used to reach the program venue 2 hours before the start of the program and personally checked out the sound system and acoustic balances. She learnt and worked with all the legendary singers of India. She is a legend just because she never behaved like she was superior and always made it a point to learn, even upto the end of her life.

A young singer Uttara Swamynathan sang few of MS. Subbalaxmi’s famous songs which were also her favourites.  This added color to the book release ceremony.
