Mysore :The MCC commissioner stayed away from the special Council meeting of Mysore City Corporation (MCC) which witnessed a hot exchange of words between Corporators at the Council Hall here today. The confusion arose owing to the absence of MCC Commissioner P.G. Ramesh who was to chair the meeting as per protocol and norms of the MCC.
The meeting was supposed to choose a member to represent MCC at MUDA.
Even as MCC Council meeting was goin on, hundreds of members of the Forum of associations/organisations against the construction of modren abattoir staged a demonstration in front of the MCC office demanding that the Council pass a resolution dropping the move to construct the abattoir at R.S. Naidunagar
MLC Sandesh Nagaraj, present at the meeting, contended that Legislative Council meetings were chaired by the Vice-Chairman in the absence of the Chairman and suggested that Additional MCC Commissioner N. Raju could preside over the meeting.
Mayor N.M. Rajeshwari and Dy. Mayor V. Shailendra initiated the meeting but was objected by Corporators. Not agreeing to Nagaraj’s suggestion, Raju too expressed unwillingness to chair the meeting citing norms of Municipal Administration Act. That triggered wordy duel among Corporators and the Mayor adjourned the meeting for a 30 minute break.
The meeting tried to resume after the break but with no respite from the bedlam. Corporator H.N. Sreekantaiah remarked that the Commissioner, who himself had called the meeting, was conspicuously absent. He urged the Mayor to lodge a complaint with Police Commissioner alleging that the MCC Commissioner was missing. With no option left, the Mayor got a draft of the complaint made and read out the contents.
Amid the turmoil, former Mayor Sandesh Swamy filled the lone nomination for the representation at MUDA. Despite protest by Congress members, Mayor declared Sandesh Swamy elected unopposed and adjourned the meeting sine die.
Speaking later to the press, Sandesh Swamy alleged that the MCC Commissioner was deliberately absent which he had done on two earlier occasions on July 27 and Aug. 1. However, referring to his election as representative in MUDA, Swamy assured to work for the welfare of the people.
