Mysuru: Inspection by the University of Mysore exposed lack of facilities including qualified teachers, principals and infrastructural facilities at most of the B.Ed colleges affiliated to it. Though they do not have proper infrastructural facilities and teachers, to everyone’s surprise all these colleges are recognized by NCTE.

Among 30 B.Ed colleges affiliated to UOM, condition of 24 is bad. During the inspection by the University of Mysore authorities, it came to light that 24 B.Ed colleges do not have proper infrastructure. Some of the colleges did not have the required number of staff including qualified teachers and principals.

Most of the colleges failed to maintain proper attendance of students and lack infrastructural facilities. There were also complaints that many students attend the exam directly after enrolling their names. In many colleges the admissions are not transparent. Among 40,000 higher education institutions in the country, 9000 of them are B.Ed colleges. B.Ed is mandatory for not only high school teachers but also Pre-University lecturers.

The University of Mysore has given a deadline that before the commencement of academic year all these 24 B.Ed colleges should meet at least minimum standards or else their affiliation to University of Mysore will be cancelled and colleges with no other option need to be closed. They should recruit qualified teachers, principals, provide basic infrastructure facilities for students and maintain proper register in the college. According to the norms, each college should have minimum of 15 teachers plus principal with 10 years of experience and a Phd but most of the colleges dont even have 8 teachings staff and qualified principal. According to reliable sources many of the B.Ed colleges are run by influential persons and hence bring a lot of pressure to University of Mysore to get their affiliation done. University of Mysore which is headed by Vice Chancellor KS Rangappa has decided to give affiliation only to those colleges who have the required facilities. To everyone’s surprise, though most of the colleges lack basic facilities, NCTE has given the recognition.

KS Rangappa said, “Keeping interest of students and future of this country, we are very strict on providing affiliation to B.Ed colleges. Only those colleges which have minimum prescribed standards will be given affiliation”. KS Rangappa formed a separate committee to look into the attendance of students, teaching staffs and infrastructural facilities by taking up surprise checks in the colleges.
