Mysuru: In an alarming incident that has created shock waves in the otherwise ‘safe’ Mahadeshwara Layout, an attempt to burgle a jewellery shop has been reported on Sunday.  According to complaint filed by Hari Bankers & Jewelers, robbers made a solid attempt to gain entry into the premises by digging an underground tunnel that had an access point through the drainage line which is located at around 10-15 ft from the shop.

Vijayanagara police have registered a case and have initiated investigation on the matter. Forensic experts were examining the available evidence.

The burglary attempt   was foiled by an alert watchman who observed that sounds were emanating from the shop around 4 am. Soon as he ensured it was voices, he came out shouting for help. Hearing this, thieves made good before any help could reach the place.

Police suspect that the burglars may have known the schedule of the shop and the owners well enough to make advance plans. The entire operation seemed like the burglars would have created an access route on Sunday night, so that they could complete the operation on Monday night when the shop would be closed on  account of ‘amavasya’ — which is a closed holiday for some jewellery shops.

Unfortunately since the CCTV camera inside the shop was switched off during the night, no video footage is available to provide immediate clues into the matter. Investigation is being conducted based on the complaint, and prima facie evidence.
