Mysuru: In a another incident of ATM theft this week, miscreants, stole an ATM card of Union Bank of India belonging to one Veerabhadrappa and withdrew a total of Rs. 1.85 lakh from six ATMs (4 ATMs in Mysuru, 1 ATM in Baburayanakoppal on Mysuru-Bangalore Highway and 1 ATM in Punjab).
The 81-year-old Veerabhadrappa, lost his ATM card had applied for a new one from the Union Bank of India and a new card was delivered to him in September. As Veerabhadrappa was not using the card frequently, he had kept the envelope containing the card along with the PIN number letter, which he had received, in a bag.
In November, when Veerabhadrappa came to know that his card was stolen, he got his passbook updated where he came to know that Rs. 1.85 lakh had been withdrawn at various ATM kiosks in Mysuru and in Punjab.
Following the withdrawal of cash by unknown persons, Veerabhadrappa’s son Somashekar lodged a complaint with APMC Navanagar Police in Hubbali on Nov. 2.
During investigation, police found out that the miscreants had withdrawn Rs. 45,000 from Vijaya Bank ATM kiosk in Baburayanakoppal on Bangalore-Mysuru Highway on Sept. 11 and 14, Rs. 20,000 from IDBI Bank ATM in Jayalakshmipuram on Sept. 13. Rs. 25,000 from Axis Bank ATM in Mandi Mohalla on Sept. 20, Rs. 25, 000 from SBI Bank ATM at Faridapet Adesh Engineering College in Punjab on Sept. 22, Rs. 45, 000 cash from HDFC Bank ATM at Lokanayak Nagar in Hebbal on Sept. 23 and Oct. 5 and Rs. 25,000 from SBI Bank ATM kiosk in Surya bakery Circle on Oct. 8.
The Hubbali Police on Nov. 9 wrote to the banks seeking CCTV footage of their ATMs but to their surprise, the footage they got from Vijaya Bank kiosk in Baburayanakoppal was completely dark and the reply they got from Axis, HDFC and SBI Banks was that the footage had been erased.
But the footage they got from IDBI Bank kiosk showed two persons withdrawing cash from the ATM.
Meanwhile, Somashekar, who left for Hubbali, received a call from one of the miscreants, who asked him not to pursue the matter and also told him that he did not know that the card belonged to his father besides telling Somashekar that he would meet him soon.
The Hubli Police based on the footage received from IDBI Bank kiosk in Jayalakshmipuram which showed two persons withdrawing cash from the ATM are investigating.
