Mysuru: The Supreme Court (SC) has imposed a penalty of Rs five crore on JSS Medical College for taking admission to MBBS course beyond the sanctioned strengt. The Court has ordered to deposit the amount within four weeks.

Justifying the punishment in terms of fine, a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and R K Agrawal said that a strong message needed to be sent to medical colleges that they could not violate its order with impunity.

The court, however, allowed the students admitted by the college to continue with their studies. It said the students have completed four-and-half years of their MBBS course and it was not proper to pass order which would disturb their study.

It also said that for the academic year 2016-17, the college would be permitted to admit only 150 students as against the sanctioned strength of 200.
