Chikkamagaluru: A Circle Inspector and a Head Constable were brutally assaulted by a mentally unstable man here on Thursday. The incident has left the people of Chikkamagaluru in state of shock.

An insane man named Jayanna alias Umesh went on an assault spree on the streets of Gaurikaluve, Taraginapete and nearby areas on Thursday afternoon after ransacking some shops. Several people were assaulted by the man using wooden clubs and weapons. Frightened people had called up Chikkamagaluru city police for help and within no time Head Constable Kumar rushed to the spot. When Kumar nabbed Jayanna and tried to send him into the police jeep, raged Jayanna pulled out a blade from his mouth and slashed Kumar’s face several times. Wailing in pain, a profusely bleeding Kumar collapsed.

Soon, Circle Inspector Krishna Raju was called to the spot by the onlookers. When the Circle Inspector tried to catch hold of Jayanna, the latter assaulted the Circle Inspector with a club, as a result of which Krishna Raju suffered head injuries.

A resident of Gaurikaluve, Jayanna had been an auto driver over the last 10 to 15 years, it is said and as per sources, Jayanna took to alcohol all of a sudden and had been since then assaulting his wife and kids in the same brutal manner.

Though case stands registered against him in Basavanahalli police station, even after several warnings from the police, Jayanna refuses to mend ways. The locals say that the police never took him seriously because he was a mentally insane person. But, the Thursday’s incident has created a sense of fear among the locals.

Meanwhile, the two injured cops are undergoing treatment.
