Chikkamagaluru: Taking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to keep an eye on gau rakshaks and their activities seriously, Chikkamagaluru Police is now collecting details of known offenders and preparing a dossier.

Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai said on Wednesday that the process of preparing the dossier on offenders will be completed in a week. “We are gathering data on cow vigilante groups that have been involved in cases so far,” he said.

Annamalai is said to have held a meeting with senior officers of the district and is said to have given them instructions on controlling cow vigilante groups.

According to police many youngsters are actively involved in cow vigilantism in Chikkamagaluru. They stop vehicles carrying cattle and inform the police. Before the arrival of the police, they assault those carrying the cattle. Five Dalits of Shantipura village were allegedly attacked by a Hindutva group for slaughtering a cow on July 10.

The police are collecting details of Praveen Khandya, a leader of Vishwa Hindu Parishat and his followers as he is said to be actively involved in cow vigilantism. There are several cases against Khandya in Balehonnur, Jayapura and other police stations in the district. He is currently absconding after being named in a kidnap case.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his statement few days back on ‘gau rakshaks,’ had suggested that all States prepare dossiers on those who take law into their hands in the name of the cow.
