Chikkamagaluru: Tension prevailed at the Fort Area in Chikkamagaluru on Monday March 27 after Hindu organisations protested against Muslims’ move to renovate a Dargah without permission.

Activists of Hindu organisations including locals, rushed to the spot and protested as soon as they got the news that a shed and toilet were being constructed near the Dargah near the peepal tree.

The land has been under dispute since 1998. No other activity can be allowed here except for the conduct of the Urus. Now the renovation is being done without obtaining permission from the local authority and this will not be allowed, the protesters maintained.

Superintendent of Police Uma Prashanth, Additional Chief Of Police Krishnamurthy and staff rushed to the spot and pacified both the sides and informed them that a meeting would be held in the afternoon under the chairmanship of the City Municipal Council President.

CMC President Varasiddhi Venugopal and Survey Department officials were present. During this time, some even argued with the police. In the afternoon, a meeting of both sides was held in the presence of Municipal President and Police officials. The Police intervened and brought the situation under control. There is no scope for any new construction work there. The status quo has to be maintained. Now the tiles are being removed.

The pro-Hindu leaders said they would not allow such activities anymore.
