Hubballi: JD(S) leader and former Minister Basavaraj Horatti broke his own record and won the biennial elections to the Karnataka West Teachers’ constituency for the seventh consecutive term by defeating BJP candidate M Nagaraj with 3,109 votes.Horatti who is a former Minister for Primary and Secodary Education was first elected from this constituency in 1980. He has a master’s degree in physical education and had served as a teacher before entering politics.
In the South Graduates Constituency poll, JD(S) candidate K T Srikante Gowda won by defeating BJP candidate M V Ravishankar.
In both the Karnataka North West Teachers’ and Karnataka North West Graduates’ constituencies, BJP candidates Arun Shahpur and Hanmanth Nirani won with comfortable margins against Congress.
In the Karnataka North West Graduates’ constituency, Nirani, brother of former Minister Murugesh Nirani, defeated his nearest Congress rival and sitting MLC Mahantesh Koujalgi.
Writer K.S. Bhagavan, who contested for the first time was polled 2,220 votes, while Kannada protagonist Vatal Nagaraj secured 692 votes.
