Science fair “BrainQuest-2014” held

Udupi: The E-Skool organised its annual Udupi district science and technology fair-cum-competition titled “BrainQuest 2014” at the Sheshashayana Hall in Hotel Kediyoor complex here on Saturday November 15.

The Director of E-Skool Poornima Kamath addressing the gathering said that the aim of the district-level “BrainQuest” was to inculcate interest and popularise science and technology among high school students.

She informed that the competitions are held in categories such as Science Quest, IQuest, Product Quest, Research Quest and FxQuest. About 400 students had participated from 30 schools around the district. In addition, students of a few colleges were also allowed to participate in Product Quest and Research Quest competitions for the first time.

Under the Science Quest, students exhibited scientific models and experiments. There were two categories under it – Physical Sciences and Life Sciences. The first, second and third prize winners would get cash prizes of Rs. 3,000, Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000 respectively.

In IQuest, the problem solving abilities of the students were tested. Students were judged on strategic, analytical, coordination, analytical and spatial skills.

Under Product Quest, teams would have to prepare a home-made fire extinguisher using indigenous materials and give it a slogan in not more than 10 words. In which fire extinguisher were made out of recycled products. Students displayed different innovative models, which could be operated by children.

In Research Quest, the participant’s displayed experiments in Physics, Chemistry and Biology of an advance level, and wrote their observations and conclusions. They were judged on the basis of their experimental design, reasoning and conclusions.

Under FxQuest, the topic given to the students is, “King Pulakeshi II meets robots.” Here the students had enacted a five-minute silent skit on this topic. Music and narration was allowed. The skit was judged on the basis of entertainment value, historical accuracy, believable storyline and creativity in costumes. Children enacted the reverence and influence of Robots in the ancient age.

The school, with highest total score in all competitions was to be given “Srinivas M. Kamath Best of Brains” Rolling Trophy.

There was also a book sale by Olakadu school children.
