Kundapur, May 24: A timely assistance by the members of the Udupi district unit of the National Federation of Human Rights has prevented a poverty stricken woman from selling her own 18 month old baby.

This pathetic tale is that of Srilatha (30) of Uppinakudru in Kundapur. Srilatha, who has been mentally ill ever since her husband deserted her a few years ago, has been staying with her parents at Uppinakudru.
But the poverty conditions at home made her life woeful to have one square meal per day, coupled with her illness and also that of her child, which suffered from stomach pain, left Srilatha almost desperate.
Finding no other way, she made up her mind to sell her kid. But the matter came to the notice of the Udupi unit of the National Federation of Human Rights whose members are also medical officers of Kundapur’s Srimatha Hospital came to her help.
Dr Satish, Dr Anand, Dr Ranjith rushed to the poor family’s aid and have promised tp provide free treatment to both Srilatha and her child at the hospital. They have also provided an aid of Rs 15000 to the family.
Uday Kumar Shetty, district president of the Federation, Ratnaker Indrali, Mohammad, Lakshmikanth Beskur, Dinesh Bangera, Abhinandan Shetty, VG Shetty, Zafrulla, Chandrika Shetty, Mahesh Shetty Paniyoor, office bearers were present on the occasion.
