Udupi: A 9 year old girl reportedly drowned after having slipped and fallen into the Chakra river Maranakatte in Kundapur here on Friday.

The incident took place while class three student Vismaya, daughter of Shekhar and Jalaja Devadiga from Sanyasibettu, studying in a nearby government school was heading towards the school with her mother.

While crossing the unsafe wooden bridge, the little girl slipped and fell into the overflowing river water due to the heavy downpour and was reportedly washed away. The onlookers attempted to save her but all efforts were in vain.

Fire service and the locals have begun a search for the body.
