Karkala: While the heavy rains of the last week, which have given the cause for cheer and the water level in all the reservoirs in the region have risen to almost full capacity, they  have also damaged the crucial infrastructure.

The water level has been flowing above the danger level at Mundli dam and on Sunday July 20, it caused a portion of the land underneath the road connecting Mundli-Karkala to collapse.   The road is situated near the dam and a part of the dam water flowsunder the road. The rise in the water level smoothened the soil, as a result of which the road collapsed.

The incident took place in the early hours, commuters were affected badly as they could not traverse the road for several hours. The entire stretch is in danger of collapse.

According to the officials, all the connectivity on the Mundli-Karkala road will be discontinued for a week to avoid accidents and to repair the road.

It is said that an Andhra-based company which had won the contract to carry out work on a power plant near Mundli reportedly cemented the dam built across the Swarna River, thus preventing the water from flowing out, which in turn raised the water level.

Tashildar, MLA Sunil Kumar and CEO of town municipal Rayappam, A C Yogeshwar visited and inspected the spot. They have ordered to repair the road at the earliest.
