Udupi :Locals here at Parkala were shocked to see a huge pit opened up in the midst of a cultivated paddy field .

Jayaram Thandri, resident of Herga village, Gollikatte, noticed the sink hole on Sunday, when he started his work in his field. It was filled with water. The next morning , viz. on Monday, he found his field which was completely dried out.  He was shocked to find that all the water in the field had drained into this suddenly opened up pit forming a  well of water.

Ramdas Nayak, one of the localite said that 12 years back such wells were found in and around this area, which closed gradually.

H N Udaya Shankar, Geologist  and professor of  Manipal Institute of Technology  said this might not be a well. This might  be  pit that might have been created naturally because of a minor fault in the earth’s crust that aided the dislocation of the soil beneath the earth.

He added the phenomenon might be the result of the congestion of the water springs, a phenomenon that was witnessed in the Parkala region some two months ago along with a 100 meters long running crack in the earth’s crust,  with uncertain depth on the rocky terrain of the earth cross in Manchikere Colony in Badagabettu.

He further added a detailed study is a must and government should do the needful. It might be a sign of something more ominous too.
