Udupi: St. Mary’s Konkani Community (SMKC), Dubai, in association with the Catholic Sabha, Udupi Pradesh has come forward to present a mega event, ‘Grand Konkan Showers 2017’, the 268th Wilfy Nite, at St. Francis Xavier English Medium School Grounds, Melpete, Udyavar, on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 5.30 p.m. in aid of the Diocesan Projects of the new Diocese of Udupi.
Speaking with media persons at Bishop’s House during the press meet, Rev. Fr. Valerian Mendonca, Convener of the programme said that SMKC, Dubai is a premier philanthropic association in the UAE. It has contributed Rs. 1.75 crore towards the community welfare projects during the past 16 years. The association has been shining in the fields of Konkani language, culture, education, social service and the like. It has not only supported the poor and needy but also assisted professional students to pursue their studies.
The choicest songs of the late Konkan Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus, the legend of Konkani Music, will be sung by his wife, Konkan Maina Meena Rebimbus, daughter Veena, son Vishwas and grandson Roger along with other celebrated singers – Prem, Ivan, Babitha D’Sa, Claude, Babitha Pinto, Munita, Ashwin, Nihal and Fr Denis D’Sa.
The diocese of Udupi, erected on July 16, 2012, has striving to establish its basic infrastructure in order to implement its vision and mission spelt out in the Pastoral Plan – MISSON 2025, through its 18 commissions. The needs of the hour of the infant diocese are : 1) A Pastoral Centre, 2) A Minor Seminary, 3) A Home for the retired Priests, 4) The Bishop’s House.
The amount collected through donations, sponsorships, offerings, etc. will go directly to the implementation of the said projects of the diocese. The diocese remains grateful to SMKC DUBAI and to CATHOLIC SABHA, UDUPI PRADESH for their willing cooperation and generous assistance. It appreciates the generosity of the benefactors and donors in India as well as abroad who are supporting the cause. The Dance performances will be presented by the ‘Ocean Kids’ of national fame. The music troupe of Pappan and Joswin will support the singing with its orchestra of 14 instrumentalists. The Comedy King Dolla and group will present the skits. The event will, indeed, be a unique and memorable one with an expected participation by 5,000 music lovers.
