Youth nabbed for luring, blackmailing girls

Udupi: A youth was arrested for allegedly luring a number of girls with promises of marriage and then blackmailing them after  shooting obscene videos. The arrest was made  by Manipal police on December 5, Thursday.

The accused has been identified as 24-year-old Ilyas from Konaje. Police say he had rented a flat at Perampalli for Rs 35,000 per month with a fake name, ‘Rahul Shetty’.

It is alleged that Ilyas who would introduce himself as ‘Rahul Shetty’ to girls on social networking sites lured them by promising marriage. After gaining their confidence he would take them to his rented flat or some lodge and shoot obscene videos, and then blackmail them to extort money and gold from them.

The incident came to light when a girl from Kemtoor was lured in the same manner. It is learnt,  Ilyas initially had demanded  ten sovereigns of gold which  she duly gave him.But, when Ilyas asked for more the girl revealed the incident to her family, who then approached the police and lodged a  complaint.

The Manipal police instructed the girl to invite Ilyas to a particular place and then nabbed him. It is learnt that Ilyas has cheated around 15-20 girls so far.

Members of VHP, Bajrang Dal and other Hindu organizations gathered at Manipal police station demanding  strict action against the accused. Manipal Circle Inspector Dinesh Kumar, Udupi Circle Inspector Maruti Nayak, Manipal SI Ravi Kumar and other officials are investigating the matter.
