Ullal: A local Good Samaritan died in a bid to rescue stranded fishermen. In the same tragedy, a a fisherman is feared drowned, while two of his companions have been rescued, after the boat in which they went deep sea fishing capsized, at Kotekar-Ullal on Saturday.
The deceased is a local resident of Ullal named Fayaz, who plunged into the turbulent sea to rescue the fisherman. The fisherman who is feared drowned is Chandran (32). He originally hails from Tamil Nadu, but settled in Ullal. His companions Kumaran and Menex have been rescued.

It is said that Chandran, Menex and Kumaran had set out fishing in a gill net boat about three days ago from Malpe. When the trio was on its way back to Malpe on Saturday, the boat capsized at the estuary near Ullal after being hit by huge wave.

All the three fishermen knew swimming and hence they had started swimming towards the shore. Fayaz, a local youth who spotted the fishermen, plunged into the sea and rescued Menex, while Kumaran swam to safety himself. When Fayaz plunged into the sea again to rescue Chandran, he could grab Chandran and even drag him for a while before being hit by a turbulent wave,. The intensity of the wave was such that Fayaz not only lost grip over Chandran, but also suffered a severe head injuries after he was slammed against a rock.

Unfortunately, though locals rescued Fayaz, he breathed his last on the way to hospital. On the other hand Chandran is feared drowned. The Coast Guards were pressed into action and the guards searched the turbulent sea for over two hours, but Chandran could not be traced. For the first time in the history of Ullal, the locals got to witness the daredevil acts of the coast guards using helicopter.
