Mangaluru: The department of Forensic Medicine and Department of Anatomy, Yenepoya Medical College are organizing a CME on 23rd March 2015 titled “The skeleton speaks”.
The Department of Forensic Medicine has launched the Post Graduate Diploma in Forensic Anthropology of one year duration.
Forensic Anthropology had been one of the specialties in the area of Forensic Science that has developed during the last 30 years. In India it has not gained as much popularity as it should have.
Forensic Anthropology is defined as the application of anthropological methods and theory – particularly those relating to the recovery and analysis of human remains – to resolve legal matters. Forensic Anthropology (FA) had moved from the traditional role of establishing the biological profile of a skeleton to a more wider context. From the archaeological recovery and exhumation of graves to the analysis of post mortem changes in the bones and bodies heavily damaged (burnt, dismembered, commingled) and the analysis of trauma.
Many Medico Legal Institutes around the world have incorporated units of Forensic Anthropology as part of the forensic services offered to the administration of justice, the USA and Latin America being the most developed.
Another important role of the forensic anthropologist is the collection of ante mortem data, using an approach coming from social anthropology to. collect in a comprehensive way the information, attending the cultural differences, as well the several concepts of health
