Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district has been witnessing a drinking water problem for the past few years. With the rains growing more scanty and the heat levels rising, water conservation is the need of the hour. Considering the seriousness of the problem, a sixth standard student, Manish K of the Deva Matha English Medium School in Kalladka, has invented a unique device that prevents water in a tank from overflowing.

With the support of his parents, Gayathri and Kiran, Manish began working his device in the month of September.

For ideas on how to go about making the device, Manish turned to the video-sharing platform, YouTube. The informative videos helped him make this device which, according to Manish, also helps monitor and control water levels in industrial plants and heavy machineries. The device has three lights- white, blue and green. The white light goes off when the tank is empty. When half the tank is filled with water, blue light goes off and when the tank is full, the green light remains. This device is also economical as it costs only Rs 200 and can be bought by anyone.

Manish wants the device to be installed in every school to save water.
