Mangalore: Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarships were distributed to 596 engineering and 28 MBBS students at a function held at TV Raman Pail Hall on September 2, Monday. The scholarships were granted from the Vishwa Konkani Student Scholarship Fund (VKSSF), instituted by Vishwa Konkani Kendra.
RV Deshpande, State Minister for Higher Education inaugurated the function and distributed the scholarships. Speaking on the occasion, Deshpande exhorted youngsters to enrich their knowledge to be able to face the competitive world. He also urged youngsters to imbibe good qualities and character and tread the path of righteousness.
Stating that the government was according top priority to the higher education sector, Deshpande added every effort is being made to encourage innovation and also to grant autonomy to deserving colleges. He said the Government spends as much as Rs 2,50,000 crore on the educational sector. He lauded the Vishwa Konkani Kendra’s initiative in awarding scholarships,
TV Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Manipal Global education, in his keynote address said the scholarship distribution through the Vishwa Konkani Kendra aimed at helping the community emerge stronger. He said youngsters apart from excelling in academics, must try to learn to solve problems and be creative.
Ramdas Kamath U, Chairman of the Scholarship Fund, said since the past three years 860 engineering and 43 MBBS students have availed scholarships and added this year scholarships worth Rs 2.5 crore is distributed.
Mangalore South MLA JR Lobo also spoke on the occasion. Basti Vaman Shenoy, President of Vishwa Konkani Kendra and Annappa Kamath were on the dais.
Lenita Menezes and Raghavendra Bhandarkar spoke on behalf of the beneficiary students.
Venkatesh N Baliga, Secretary of Vishwa Konkani Kendra compered the programme.
