The cost of eggs and onions at the market has increased dramatically. The market’s abrupt increase in onion and egg prices can be ascribed to a number of things, such as the removal of export limits on onions and the return of students to their dorms, which has raised the demand for eggs.
The decision by the union government to remove export limits and unanticipated rains in areas of Maharashtra, where onions are widely grown, have caused onion prices to soar. Onions are currently priced between Rs 22 and Rs 25 in the wholesale market and Rs 30 to Rs 35 in the retail market, compared to their previous prices of Rs 14–15 per kilogram.
Price changes were initially brought on by rumors of the lifting of export restrictions, and they were made worse by unexpected rains that affected Maharashtra’s crop production.
Growers are demanding better prices for their products because the government has allowed onion exports, which has resulted in some hoarding and decreased sales. Prices for onions are expected to rise further in the days ahead.
In the wholesale market, egg prices have also been volatile lately, falling to Rs 4.80 per piece on May 2 then climbing to Rs 6.60 on May 10.
