New Delhi: Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Jayaprakash Hegde has assured people of Niddodi that a thermal power project will not be set up in their village. This assurance will certainly give some relief to the people of Niddodi who have been on a war path against the proposed project that is expected to spell doom on the village as well as surrounding villages.

Jayaprakash Hegde had recently met Union Power Minister Jyothiraditya Scindhia and held discussions with him regarding the widespread opposition to the project. The MP also handed over a letter to the minister drawing the attention of the latter towards the drastic consequences in the event of the setting up of the project.

The letter further said Niddodi was a village where agriculture was the main occupation of the villagers and that any such project would wreak havoc on the life of the farmers. It will also affect the fragile eco system as well as river Nandini, the lifeline of the area, the letter said and urged the minister to consider shifting the proposed project to some other ideal location.

The letter also pointed out that already a thermal project was operating within a 12 km radius from the site where the project is supposed to come up at Niddodi.
