Udupi:Five men who are said to be the associates of notorious don Bannanje Raja as well as two other dons who are operating from abroad, have been arrested by the Udupi police led by Inspector Maruthi G Nayak on September 26, Thursday. The five were arrested near the Ashirvad Theatre, Santhekatte Puttur. Police have also seized swords and chilly powder found in the car used by the accused.
All the five have been charged with making threatening calls for hafta to businessmen of Udupi area and also conspiring to kill the entrepreneurs who turned down their demand.
The arrested have been identified as Mohammad Maksood Moodbidri, Mohammad Haneef alias Bada Haneef alias Mother India Haneef of Karkala, Sachin Poojari of Ambagilu, Sayyed Buran Kaup and Shamshuddin Hanumanthanagar.
All of them have been produced before the court which has remanded them to judicial custody till October 7.
Police said the five were also aides of Siraj Hassan of Doddanagudde and Sameer of Hanumanthanagar who too operated from abroad. Their modus operandi was to first collect the mobile numbers of businessmen and then make hafta demand. The numbers were also sent abroad for their accomplices there to call to make threatening calls to the businessmen.
