Moodabidri: The Bachelor of Social Work Department of Alva’s college Moodabidri, organised a two-day “Alva’s Reach -2017” national seminar on “Perspective on Women’s Health across the Lifespan”, on Friday at Kuvempu Hall, Vidyagiri. “Alva’s Reach-2017” is an attempt to evolve new dimensions which can lead the way ahead under the motto of ‘’Reach the Unreached through Collective Action.’’
After inaugurating the programme, Dr. Jamuna Prakash, Professor, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri said, “A woman is linked to the three generations of a family. If we take care of one woman of the family, the entire three generations connecting past, present and future are nurtured automatically.” She said woman is directly responsible to the family and the family depends on community and community to the nation. Women in India do not have equal access to autonomy, mobility outside the home, social freedom, etc., when compared to men. Some of the problems faced by the women are because of their domestic responsibilities, cultural and social specified roles, she noted.
“Is gender equality really followed in India?”, She questioned and said the answer was, “No.” She added concern for health and food distribution among boys and girls was discriminatory. Investment on health of women in India is very meagre, even below the underdeveloped countries, she lamented. Selective abortion and female infanticide, dowry and bride burning, disparity in education, inadequate nutrition, sexual harassment, domestic violence and status in the family are the reason behind her agony, she opined.
Alva’s Education Foundation Chairman Dr Mohan Alva, Presiding over the programme said instead of speaking more about the issue, action oriented initiative is the need of the hour. If everyone delivered their duties and responsibilities properly, no discrimination will be found in any area, he added.
A short film of BSW students on save water and save life, called ‘’Drop’’ was released in the programme. The formal function was followed by technical sessions, talent events like social melody (social awareness songs), collage making (women empowerment), poster making (violence against women) and paper presentation.
Alva’s College Principal Dr Kurian, Alva’s BSW Dept Head Dr Madhumala, Seminar Convener Sapna, student coordinators Meghachandra, Kripa Kailar were present among others.
