Udupi : Tension prevailed at Nejar near Kallianpur on October 16, Wednesday on Bakrid Day when nearly 150 members of the Hindu outfits objected to the offering of Namaz by Muslim community members at a disputed building in the area. Though a mosque was supposed to be constructed there, the works were stayed by the court after Hindu outfits had moved the court as many as eight years ago.
It is learnt, this time, namaz was offered at the building for the first time in the past eight year period.
The argument of the Hindu outfits was there was no need for having another mosque when a mosque was located in a vicinity of one km. But, the Muslim leaders argued that the existing mosque could not accommodate large number of people. Moreover they said the building where the namaz was offered belonged to them.
But the adamant Hindu outfits also warned of a protest by blocking the Kemmannu main road in the event of the Namaz offered in the afternoon and evening.
Udupi SP Boralingaiah, DySP Prabhudeva Maane Circle Inspector Maruthi Nayak and other police officials are at the spot to ensure there is no untoward incident.
