Tanker goes beserk at Gurupur; kills woman, injures five

Mangalore: A woman was killed and five others sustained injuries when a cashew oil transportation tanker went out of control  at Gurupur in the outskirts of the city on December 25, Wednesday.

If a woman who had been to a nearby temple to offer harake was run over by the tanker, another woman  has been admitted to a private hospital with a broken leg. Four others also sustained injuries.

The bullet tanker (TN 04, T 1386) Of Tamil Nadu registration was heading towards the Gurupur junction via Kaikamba from Moodbidri when it all of a sudden  suffered a brake failure at around 3.15 pm. It first crashed against a Swift car and dragged it up to  half a furlong before  hitting  the Sribaba Gift and Fancy Shop. Even another car was badly mangled and finally it stopped after landing against a nearby building.

In the process, a woman who was heading towards the Satyadevatha Temple  lost her life. The deceased is Sumithra Kamath (55) , wife of Ramananda Kamath of Kasargod Adinagar. She had arrived  at Gurupur to  receive Prasada after offering Harake to the Lord.

The vehicle had around 4000 litres of cashew oil and the failure of the driver to effectively control the vehicle is learnt to have led to the mishap. There was traffic blockade on the route till evening. Fire Service and police personnel helped in the relief operation.

The accident is learnt to have incurred losses to the tune of lakhs of rupees.
