Mangaluru: Though the parliament had passed a bill to make living better for innumerable street vendors across the country, the street vendors in the city aired their grievances against central and state governments by staging protest for not implementing the same in letter and spirit.
Keeping forth their demands such as renewal of 208 Identity cards issued earlier.(pending since 9 months), issue of fresh identity cards for the remaining 350 vendors, alternative location to carry out business as committed by authorities, call to organize Town Vending Committee (TVC) meeting, pending since 9 months and prevent frequent attacks by law enforcing agencies, street vendors under the aegis of CITU staged a stir outside Mangaluru City Corporation, on Thursday.
The vendors said that though several welfare programmes have been announced none have seen the light of the day and they continue to run their business in constant fear of raids from Corporation authorities.
“They say we should not carry our business on in Central market, State Bank areas. If not there, then where? If you are saying that we should not carry on our business in a particular area, then you should also show us where we could be relocated,” said a vendor.
Union leaders Sunilkumar Bajal, Mohammad Mustafa among others were present.
