Mangaluru: A street play, ‘Nirbhayatva’ to spread awareness on women safety was staged on Thursday at St. Aloysius College. The first year students of Mass Communication and Media Studies went on stage to send out the message to stand up for women issues.

The play was designed by students headed by Sunny and David of the communication stream. However performance of the play was mandated by the stream as a part of study on creative communication. Today’s play would fetch marks for them, which would be added up for internal assessment, a student informed.
Speaking to Newskarnataka.com David who hails from Goa said the play was composed to create awareness among the students of St. Aloysius on women’s safety. The play specifically depicts rape incidents and how the public should stand up for bizarre incidents to turnaround the erroneous thinking in regard to this issue and ensuring safety of females in the country.
When asked his opinion on women’s freedom in Mangaluru in comparison with Goa, he opined that females in Mangaluru enjoy less liberty than the women in Goa. He gave the example of curfew times for women to get back to hostels and homes, and said women in Goa were expected to get back home before nine or ten in the night. He expressed in Mangaluru hostels closes down at 6 or 6.30 pm in the evening, while parents stipulate the same deadline.
He added, the opportunities for women here are less. The issue of women safety was narrated through the play in ten minutes. The whole street play circled around rapes, conveying the conclusive message that we must change the system to making the country a rape free one.
