St Agnes College Women’s Day celebrations with appeal for gender equality

Mangaluru: A talk on the theme, ‘Empowerment of women – Empowerment of Humanity’, to commemorate the International Women’s Day, was inaugurated at St Agnes College on Saturday March 7. This programme was organized by the women’s cell of the college, in association with the women’s study centre and St Agnes Alumni Association of the college.

Uma MG Principal – District and Session Judge DK was the chief guest. Addressing the gathering she said, “Empowerment of women is an essential aspect of the society, over 100 years women have been fighting for equality; however gender discrimination is still prominent.”

“Women constitute 50% of the world population, although it is not India alone were women face legal, economic as well as social indifference, in many parts of the world women are still considered as secondary”, she added.
She added that the even the Indian constitution denotes equality among gender as the fundamental right – women should realise this, firstly, they must be given power, authority and opportunity, to be empowered. Currently the marginalised section of women in the society needs to be concentrated.

“If a women is empowered, the humanity is empowered, the society is empowered”, she concluded.

Dr. Asha Jyothi Rai – Director of ‘AASARE’ charitable trust also delivered a talk on ‘Changing role of women towards empowerment’.

Earlier, a dance performance by on the theme ‘Save girl child’ was presented and a mindboggling mimic was performed by Chaitra and group addressing the ‘2012 Delhi gang rape – Nirbhaya case’. A Karate performance was also done to symbolize self defence.

St. Agnes Alumni Association honors four young achievers on Women’s Day

St.Agnes Alumni Association honored four young women achievers from different fields, here on International Women’s Day 8 March 2015.
   
The trend of honoring Agenesian Young Achievers was started as a part of the Agnesian Centenary Project in the year 2012-13.
   
Dr.Asha Jyothi Rai, the Chief Guest of the Programme along with Principal of the St.Agnes College, Rev.Sr.Supriya, A.C., Mrs.Usha Fernandes Vice-President of the Agnesian Alumnae Association and Secretary Saramma Jayaraj graced the dais for the function.
   
The Association honoured four Young Achievers in four different fields of the current Academic Year.
   
Pamela D’Costa, Student President of the College was conferred the ‘Agnesian Student Leader of the Year Award’. The Award was instituted by Ms Carol Pais Coelho in honour and memory of her parents, Philip and Mariette Pais. Pamela was introduced by Jane D’Souza.
   
The ‘Most Talented Student of the Year’ went to Ms Benzita R.Ferrao who was introduced to the gathering by Ms Judith D’Silva. This Award is instituted by Ms Marjorie Texiera.
   
The ‘Agnesian Scholar of the Year Award’ went to Ms.Glany Lizzie Misquith who was introduced by Ms Charlotte Mascarenhas. The Award has been instituted by Dr. Meera Aranha.
   
Likhita H.V. was the recipient of the ‘Agnesian Sportswoman Award’, instituted by Ms Daizy Menezes Coelho. Likhita was introduced by Ms.Nayana Ballal.

The Awardees were presented with a Cash, bouquet of flowers and a memento.
   
On behalf of the Awardees, Ms Pamela D’Costa expressed her sentiments. Usha Fernandes, Vice-
President proposed the vote of thanks.

The entire program was meticulously planned and executed by Carol Pais.

St Agnes Women’s cell celebrates International Women’s Day

The Women’s Cell in association with Women’s study center of St. Agnes college celebrated International Women’s Day at the college auditorium here on 7th March 2015.

The programme began at 9:30 a.m with a traditional welcome of the dignitaries.  Blessings of the Almighty were invoked through a prayer song rendered beautifully by Aptha & Group.  The traditional lamp was lit by the students which indicated that brightness and light should be bought into the lives of all women around the world.

This was Raviya and group performed a thought provoking dance on the theme ‘save a girl child’. The mime artists of the college enacted the very emotional incident of the Delhi gang rape.

A Karate demonstration was held by the students who have been learning karate since the beginning of the year and who had earned orange belt.

Chief Guest Mrs. Uma M.G., principal, district & sessions judge of Dakshina Kannada Mangaluru, principal Sr. Supriya, vice principal Sr. Jeswina, co-ordinator Mrs. Agneita  & coordinator of women’s study center Mrs. Sharon Rego, were on the dais

Co-ordinator Mrs. Agneita Aiman welcomed the gathering and introduced the chief guest who addressed the gathering subsequently.

In view of  women’s day, the women’s cell organised a few competitions and the prizes were distributed by the chief guest.

The Principal distributed certificates to the outstanding karate students and also gave her presidential remarks.

On the occasion, Dr. Asha Jyothi Rai, delivered the key note address on the  ‘Changing role of women towards empowerment.’   She was introduced and welcomed by Ms. Chetana. Pallavi thanked her for the enlightening talk.

The MC for the programme was the Women’s Cell Secretary Ms. Alaina Pereira.
