Six-year-old struggles for a normal life, require funds for intestine repair

Mangalore, May 27: A six-year-old, Swathik, is born with a birth defect in his abdominal (belly) wall, whereby his intestines came out of his body, through a hole beside the belly button.

The defect is known to be as Gastroschisis, it occurs early during pregnancy in mother’s womb when baby’s muscles fail to form his abdominal wall correctly.

Owing to this hole, body’s intestines and other organs get extend outside of the body, usually to the right side of belly button.

It is happens when intestines are not covered in a protective sac and are exposed to the amniotic fluid, this may cause irritation in bowel, causing it to shorten, twist or swell.

Soon after the baby is born, a surgery is required to take place at the abdominal organs inside the baby’s body so as to repair the abdominal wall.

Doctors conducted a surgery so as Swathik, could lead a normal life. But, even after seven surgeries in a span of six years, he is yet not able to lead a normal life.

He still struggles with several problems such as unable to urinate and doctors have to make alternate arrangements to provide him relief.

His activities are restricted though he suffers immense pain on a daily basis, also bleeds while coughing.

Further, a surgery for a related heart condition is required to permanently cure his condition, which is expectedly to be an expensive surgery that requires Lakhs.

His father Venkappa is mentally challenged; mother is a beedi worker and a sole earner. They do not have a house of their own and survive below the poverty line. They require urgent generosity of the public to contribute for his surgery.
