Mangalore: In the wake of  rising cases of violence and atrocities on the youth in the city, State Health Minister U T Khader discussed the issues with the Mangalore city police department and other officials to suggest measures to  tighten the security system around  educational institutions.

Addressing a press meet on Saturday January 4, at Circuit house U T Khader said, “Mangalore is a city of universities and educational institutes, many young students from around the world come to pursue their career here, thus it is our responsibility to ensure their security.”

“Students come from outstation; the College managements  do  not have a control over the students as they stay in hostels outside  the college or rent rooms. As they are also not under the direct care of their parents, it is likely for some of  them to get involved in  anti-social activities”, he added.

Insisting the political representatives, the police department as well as the institutes  to provide security to the students, he said he has already urged the authorities to prepare an action plan.

Keeping the safety of students in mind Khader enlisted a number of measures including  “Regular Patrolling, setting up of police outposts near every college, an eye on hangouts, security kiosk to have security personnel during night hours, junctions to have CCTV cameras and intelligence and police in disguise to be increased in  prominent areas.”

“Moreover every institute will have security personnel who will be directly in contact with the police department”, he added.

Elaborating the details, the Minister  said that the initiatives are taken under the guidelines of the Police Commissioner R Hitendra. He said anyone resorting to unlawful acts  will be taken into custody and stringent action will be taken against habitual offenders and anti-social elements.
