Rs 1.87 crore for colleges in Mangaluru North: Bawa

Mangaluru: Mangaluru North MLA B.A. Mohiuddin Bava said the State Government has released funds for upgrading buildings, including those of Government First Grade College, Kavoor, and Government Junior College, Krishnapura.

Speaking to the reporters here in the city, he said that the State government has released Rs. 1.87 crore for the construction of five additional classrooms and toilets. The First Grade College at present has 175 students studying BA, B.Com and BBM courses and it intended to start additional courses after the new infrastructure is in place, he said and added it is the only important government college that was located in the constituency.

College Principal Tara said they planned to offer a few postgraduate courses in the coming days. She said the grant would help the college get more students.

Besides, Bawa said Rajya Sabha Member Oscar Fernandes had promised to get Rs. 50 lakh released from his MP Local Area Development funds for the improvement of Krishnapura Junior College grounds.

He said the government had released Rs. 40 lakh for the development of 26 government schools in his constituency. Plans are on to develop playgrounds at Krishnapura Higher Primary School and Kulur Vidyanagar School at a cost of Rs. 40 lakh and Rs. 35 lakh, respectively.

He said that Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL) had agreed to reconstruct a new building for the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Higher Primary School at Thannirbhavi at a cost of Rs 25 lakh as the current building was in a dilapidated state. The company would build five class rooms and one office room under its corporate social responsibility initiative, Mr. Bava said.

Investors’ meet

Mangaluru North MLA B.A. Mohiuddin Bava said an investors’ meet to attract funds for the expansion of the International Airport would be held in Dubai within a month.

Mr. Bava said about Rs. 1,100 crore was needed for the expansion involving acquisition of 189 acres of land. District in-charge Minister B. Ramanath Rai had met with the Minister for Infrastructure Development R. Roshan Baig on this topic.

He said the investors’ meet would also be attended by people’s representatives from the region.
