Mangaluru: World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hours period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. Mangalore Institute of Oncology, 92.7 BIGFM, Mangalore City Traffic Police and Lions club Mangalore jointly Initiated the walkathon on May 31st, to spread the message of this day.
Dr. Jalaluddin Akbar, Managing Director Of Mangalore Institute of Oncology, Lion district Governor HS Manjunath murthy, Lion Governor for Next year Mrs. Kavita Shastry, Lions club PRO Mr. Taranath Shetty Bolar, Traffic ACP Udayanayak, Durga Das, PRO of MIO RJ Errol from 92.7 BIG FM were present.
Dr.Jalaluddin Akabar, Dr.Krishna Prasad and Dr Dinesh Shet from Mangalore institute of Oncology were on air on 92.7 BIG FM to spread the message about the problems caused by tobacco and they interacted with the listeners clarifying their queries.
On the day of Walkathon, speaking on the occasion, Dr.Jalaluddin Akbar said, “It’s not difficult to quit smoking if you have strong will power to do so. It’s always better if you have the control on smoking habit. I thank each and everyone who are gathered here in large number to support this cause.
Lion Manjunath said, “It’s heard that large number of deaths happen due to the consumption of tobacco. It’s high time to understand that smoking is not a cool habit and life is larger than smoking.’
Walkathon begun from Mangalore institute of Oncology Hospital, Via Kankanady and reached jyothi Circle(Ambedkar circle). Traffic ACP Mr. Udayanayak Said, “I am happy to see the support for this initiative . Make ‘Dhum idre Dhum bidi’ is the Mantra of your life.’’
Certificates were handed over to 2 candidates who accepted the challenge by 92.7 BIG FM, ‘Dhum Idre Dhum Bidi’ to stay without smoking for 72 hours. Many participants failed to complete 72 Hours. Sushan and Ashith succeeded and they received the certificate issued by 92.7 BIGFM.
A large dummy cigarette was crushed at the Ambedkar Circle as a symbol of destroying cigarette from the world.
Rj Errol, Rj Rakshitha, Joel Rebello and Members of 92.7 BIG fm ,Doctors and staffs from Mangalore institute of Oncology, Lions club Members, Mangalore City Traffic Police and people from various organizations were present at this occasion.
