Quarry pit claims lives of two innocent kids

Mangalore : Two boys belonging to families of labourers from Belgaum, drowned in an open stone quarry pit at Kayarpadavu on the borders of Ulaibettu-Bondantila villages on the outskirts of the city on June 9, Sunday.

The deceased are Manjunath (5) son of Shekhappa and Sarojini and Rajendra alias Raju (13), son of Dadasaheb and Suma couple.  The mishap took place when the elders of their families had been to Mangalore to purchase essentials as it was a holiday.

Initially, it was Raju who was playing nearby who drowned in the pit. On seeing him drowning, Rajendra rushed to his aid only to get drowned.

The quarry pit which was unused had been covered with soil by the owner. However, a small portion remained to be filled with soil. This portion was filled with water due to rains and has now claimed two innocent lives.
